Bag/Pannier Question

edited August 2012 in Legacy Products
I am thinking about getting a Path 8 and I was hoping someone would be able to answer a question for me. I use a Topeak TrunkBag DXP with my current roadbike and I would love it if I would be able to use it (and the expandable panniers) with the Path 8/luggage rack. Anyone have any info? Here is a link to the bag on the topeak website http://topeak.com/products/Bags/MTXTrunkBagDXP

Thanks for your time.

  • Hello Yetisnack,

I just purchased a Path 8 and installed this bag http://bontrager.com/model/08099 which is very similar to yours. The bag works great, I hope this information helps you.

    Cheers,

    Ed
  • Thanks Ed for the response. I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be scraping the ground with the panniers when they are loaded. I thought about it after posting my original message and even if the radius of the tire is only 10", I would imagine the rack sits at least 1 - 1.5" above the tire. My panniers are only about 7.5 inches long, so I should be fine. Any pics you might have of the bag in action would be appreciated though.
  • FYI - the stock TT rack on my Rover sits about 3-4" above the fender. It has some adjustment so you *could* lower it a bit if you wished to do so.

"Trailbear" (member here) mounted a topeak rack on his Rover, you might PM him for details?

  • I ended up retro-fitting my Topeak rack onto my path. it sticks up about 6 inches above the tire, so there should be plenty of room for the fenders when I get them. the only downfall is after reclining the seat a few notches, my head now bumps into the bag when it is on the rack. I may end up getting the TT rack for my path and moving the Topeak one to The Wife's rover.
  • Dumb question can you put a 3 or 2 person tent into a big pannier.I'm thinking of goiing trailer free next year. That way I can do more tours than just the Greene Trails Cycling Classic every year with having a big trailer pushing me.

Depends on the tent... I can get a few of my 2 man backpacking tents the panniers on my topeak mtx bag. there are much bigger panniers on the market that should be able to get you where you are going.
  • Since I am a "kitchen sink" kind of guy, and, I hope to do some small tours in the future, I built a trailer to pull with my Rover. With this setup, I am only limited by how much weight I am willing to pull along with me.

    From this kit to;

To this trailer - it weighs 26lbs (INC the Rubbermaid box) and can carry 100lbs.

    Or Nyla, my 74lb GSD.

  • :D Ok update on the rack and pannier. Got a Universal rack and panniers this year. Put a 2 person tent on top of the rack with my bedding put the clothes in one side and just in case my rainsuit in the other painnier. Needless to say I had help and my friend didn't put it on right. It was by the grace of God I didn't loose anything because he didn't follow instructions needless to say it's being done right at the Bicycle Stop here in town. Took Bumble in for the yearly tune up. Hoping I have the fundage to get her out.
  • How bout some photos of the new setup?

Here is my complete setup while on the GAP for nine days:
